You’ll see some of the most amazing beaches, the most southerly point of Africa at Cape Agulhas and the magnificent formations Cango Caves. Itinerary for your experience
Day 1
Arrival Day! You will be transferred form Cape Town International Airport to Dune Lodge where you will receive a welcome and Orientation from Co-ordinator. You will have time to settle into the lodge and relax and You will receive an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about the culture and country, and how to effectively contribute during your volunteer experience.
Day 2
After breakfast, you’ll head to a morning tour of the nearby Hangberg community. Your tour guide is a local leader who lives in the community and is involved in many of the youth interventions to encourage positive development. Hangberg is one of the two communities around Hout Bay where your volunteering project work will be based. After lunch, you’ll go on a boat trip around the bay and to Seal Island.
Day 3
You will be given a ticket for the Open-Top Red Bus, the official City Sightseeing red bus tour which takes you to all of Cape Town’s sights including Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, District Six Museum and Camps Bay Beach. You can hop on and off at your leisure. This will help you get a feel for the city and to identify how to get to the sights you wish to explore futher.
Day 4 - 7
Learn to Surf!
Surf lessons will usually be in the mornings and will be timed depending on tides and conditions. You'll be introduced to the surf school which is just around the corner from Dune Lodge accommodation and today you will start your first surf lesson of four. Lessons are 1.5 hours or instruction followed by an extra 30 minutes of practice time. Then back to the lodge to shower, change and have lunch. There may be the opportunity to be introduced to your volunteer projects around your Thursday and Friday lessons if you still have energy! Or if you prefer you can relax or arrange a fun activity or more sightseeing.
Day 8 - 21
You will be placed with organisations in the disadvantaged Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu areas of Hout Bay. You will usually attend one project in the mornings, Monday to Friday, and a different Project in the afternoons, Monday to Thursday. The majority of morning projects we work with are child care centres for pre-school aged children. In the afternoons you will assist at a after school club for primary school aged children. Volunteers will help with lesson planning and learning activities, painting educational murals and reading/writing. You’ll work in direct contact with these children on a daily basis taking care of their basic needs and giving them much-needed love and care.
There is also the option to work at a local centre for the disabled, whose aim is to develop the skills of clients to be able to earn a small income and build self-confidence. Disability is still stigmatised in South Africa and the centre is a safe space for those who attend. You may help with the skills training, including crafts or gardening projects and also with literacy lessons. A big part of your role is to be friendly and supportive and encourage the clients. Friday afternoons and weekends are free to relax and explore. You may wish to hire surf boards to continue practicing your new surf skills, You could visit the well known surf beach of Muizenberg not too far from hout Bay, or there is no shortage of things to do in and around the beautiful City of Cape Town. Ideas for day trips include visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach and going to Cape Point National Park, hiking up Table Mountain, going on a wine tour, visiting Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens or do a tandem skydive! Other ways to enjoy the vibe of Cape Town is to explore the bars and shops of Long Street, saunter the docksides of the V&A Waterfront, or take a boat out to Robben Island Museum where Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner for 27 years.
Day 22- 27
During your final week you will hop on a mini bus and join a roup tour along the famous “Garden Route” known for its beautiful coastal villages and towns set against the backdrop of ancient forests and rugged mountains. On the tour your accommodation and activities are all arranged for you with most of your meals included. You will need to buy your own lunches and one dinner, one breakfast. You will visit The Southernmost tip of Africa - Cape Agulhas National Park - where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet, The semi-desert region of the Klein Karoo and Oudshorn - known as the ostrich capital of the world - you'll meet some ostriches on a working ostrich farm. Also Wilderness, Tsitsikamma and Knysna Heads - all of which provide plenty of stunning instagrammable photo ops. June to December you'll have the chance to sight migrating humpback whales. You may fit in a stop at surf town Jeffreys Bay to show off your new board skills. Many activities are included on the tour, but there are also options to include more at extra cost, depending on your interests - for example for the adrenaline junkies there is bungee jumping from the world's highest commercial bungee jump (216m). ).
Day 28
Your final day - a Sunday - is a chance to return to your favourite city sights or fit in what you didn't manage to see yet, before preparing for your departure or onward travel.
Day 29
Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the lodge in Hout Bay and will fly out of Cape Town International Airport or depart by other means.
Airport transfer is included on the designated departure day, otherwise early departures are responsible for their own transportation.
Day 29 onwards
You will spend the next days returning to the volunteer projects working with one of the child care centers in the Hout Bay area that are assisting disadvantaged children. During your remaining weeks (dependent on the duration you choose) you will be working at the care centres you will get involved with a number of different projects that aim to inspire and uplift the lives of these children. Volunteers will help with lesson planning and learning activities, painting educational murals and reading/writing. You’ll work in direct contact with these children on a daily basis taking care of their basic needs and giving them much-needed love and care.
There is also the option to work at a local center for the disabled, whose aim is to develop the skills of clients to be able to earn a small income and build self-confidence. Disability is still stigmatized in South Africa and the center is a safe space for those who attend. You may help with the skills training, including crafts or gardening projects and also with literacy lessons. A big part of your role is to be friendly and supportive and encouraging the clients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need experience to join this project?
How long is the work day?
This can vary but typically you will depart from your accommodation around 08:00am to arrive at your project and get started around 08:30. There is always a lunch break of at least one hour, and projects will resume in the afternoon with a finish time around 16:00. You'll have plenty of free time to relax and explore in the evenings and at weekends.
How many people will I be working alongside?
Each month we have a variety of volunteers join us from all over the world. In most cases you will be staying at a lodge with shared accommodation with perhaps 4-20+ other volunteers, however, these volunteers may be split amongst several different volunteer projects during the day. This is a great opportunity to meet and mix with volunteers who have different interests, but still get to have an intimate project experience!
What is the typical age of participants on the programme?
When/how should I book by flights?
Do I need any vaccinations?
Please check with your primary healthcare provider for the most current advice and let them know that you will be traveling to southern Africa. They may want to make sure all of your vaccinations are up to date and may have health recommendations for you. Essentially, it is up to you to seek current advice and decide whether you want to want to get vaccinated or take any malaria prophylaxis.
What about visas?
Visa requirements will depend on your nationality and it is your own responsibility to check whether or not you need a visa, so make sure you check on your local governments’ travel site for the most up to date information. However, many nationalities are able to obtain a 30-day tourist visa on entry at the border. If you are staying for longer periods our staff will help you with an extension in the country.
What about travel insurance?
It is your own responsibilty to obtain sufficient insurance cover for medical emergencies and other mishaps that could occur on your trip. It is strongly recommended that all volunteers have a valid travel insurance policy that will cover them for the duration of their stay.
Where does your project fee go?
By signing up with us you are donating your time and skills to work directly with communities in need through a structured project. There are many benefits of volunteering with an organisation like ours. Sometimes it is hard to find projects to support in a foreign country that are safe, worthwhile and reputable. When you sign-up for one of our projects for 2 or 12-weeks, you become part of a bigger, sustainable plan that our team of qualified staff has carefully crafted. You will also receive travel and visa support, orientation, a safe place to stay, logistical support, in addition to clear expectations of the work you will do. This is why we charge a fee for volunteering or interning abroad.
Your project fee goes towards a company you can trust, an experience that is worthwhile and an opportunity that will make a positive and sustainable impact on the community you have chosen to serve.
