NEW partner in Cape Town Youth Development
We are delighted to announce a new volunteer placement with Snipers Basketball club as part of our Cape Town program. This amazing organisation was established by Bryn Mbuwula a sport enthusiast who had a passion for developing youth.
Bryn established a boys’ basketball team which plays regularly in the Cape Town basketball league. Members practice 4 nights a week after school and on Fridays they complete homework to keep focused on studies. It aims to give youth activities to fill their time productively, be healthy and do better at school. The team became a success and a girls’ team has now also been established.
As you can see from their smiling faces in the picture, the children are loving basketball!
The members are all from Imizamo Yethu Township, a remarkable and diverse place with a great sense of community. Unfortunately poverty, unemployment, drug use and gang violence troubles this township. The club has brought health and fitness into their lives as well as helping to improve their academic achievement at school and avoiding negative lifestyles. It most certainly gives its young members more chance to succeed in life.
The role of the volunteer helping out on this project is to help at the practice sessions, so anyone with knowledge in basketball, fitness or nutrition are actively encouraged to apply. Those slightly less sporty will provide mentoring and support to the players, plus helping with life style development. Volunteers are also welcome to go along to matches held at weekends to support the team! The placement will usually be combined with morning work at local preschools.
