Volunteer in Mozambique on the Marine Conservation Project and help with hands-on whale shark research, coral reef monitoring, humpbacked whale monitoring, manta ray and turtle ID and nest surveys, as well as, explore one of Africa’s best scuba diving destinations. Complete your volunteer experience with a week exploring the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland and the world famous Kruger National Park on a 4 night camping safari.

You will be staying at Albatroz Lodge for the duration of your experience, which is situated next to the office and dive centre, and a few steps up from stunning Tofo Beach! Whilst in Kruger you will be camping inside the park at the Lower Sabie campsite. Three meals a day will also be provided, some on a self-serve basis and others cooked for you. There are 2 distinct parts to this travel experience each with its own interesting flavour. In Mozambique, your role will be to collect important data and conduct activities to support research and conservation efforts in the area. As a volunteer you will help monitor whale shark numbers, behaviour and ecology and take underwater identification photographs of the whale sharks. You will also join research scuba dives to help monitor the condition of coral reefs and indicator species of reef fish. At certain times of the year you may help survey humpback whale numbers and turtle nesting activity as well as other indicators of the health of marine biodiversity. You may also assist with beach cleanups and other general environmental activities. You may also help upload and analyze the field data and create awareness among the general public of the importance of the marine environment.
In Kruger you will be joining a camping safari holiday. Here your days will be spent on game drives searching for the incredibly diverse wild life that this world renowned national park has to offer, while at night you will be camped out under the African stars, sitting around a crackling campfire listening to tales of the African bush. While in Kruger your guide will teach you about the animals and plants of the African Savanna and how important it is to protect this beautiful but fragile eco-system.
Day in the life of a volunteer:
|7:00||Wake up to see the sunshine and get yourself started for the day with breakfast!|
|7:30||Get prepared for your research dive – get your equipment together and head to one of the dive sites, and conduct research including fish and manta ray surveys
Or you may go on an ocean safari and go searching for whale sharks and dolphins to take photo ID shots and record behavioural data,
|12:30||Time to either return to your accommodation for lunch after an action packed morning!|
|14:00||Go to the office and enter data onto our databases of the research work you did that morning|
|15:00||Depending on the time of year – you may be collecting data on humpback whales from the top of the sand dunes, uploading photo IDs into the database, conducting turtle nest surveys or improving the beach environment with a clean-up collection.|
|16:30||Return back to your accommodation and share your day’s adventures with other volunteers, maybe even a quick swim in the ocean!|
|18:00||Enjoy a delicious evening meal and relax……|
Day 1-2 Arrival and Orientation
Fly into Inhambane, Mozambique via Johannesburg (more details in “Getting there” section in the Destination – Mozambique file). At the airport upon arrival in Inhambane you will be welcomed by an All Out Africa staff member who will drive you to your accommodation in Tofo and you will enjoy the stunning beach view from the veranda! The second day begins with an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about your 5 week experience. You will also take part in an orientation in which you will learn how to get around using public transport.
Day 3-7 PADI Dive Course
All dives and dive courses are dependent on weather and ocean conditions. In most cases it takes 4 – 5 day to get your PADI scuba course completed – then you are ready to go!
Day 8-26 Project Activities
Marine conservation project activities including an average of 1-2 dives per week and 2-3 ocean
safari launches per week. All launches are dependent on weather and ocean conditions. Shore based activities include turtle walks and whale monitoring.
Types of research activities you will be involved in include taking photo ID shots of whale sharks
and manta rays, recording the behavior of humpack whales and dolphins, identifying species of fish, and monitoring coral health.
Day 27-30 Ezulwini Valley, Kingdom of Swaziland
You and the rest of your volunteer group will travel by private bus from Mozambique to Swaziland where you’ll spend 3 full days. You will stay at Lidwala Backpacker Lodge in the Ezulwini Valley (the Valley of Heaven). From here you will be able to relax and explore the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland. Included in your package is a half day walking tour of the cultural capital of Swaziland and you’ll get to learn about the history and current affairs of the Kingdom. During your stay you can also participate in zip lining, white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding in a nature reserve, quad biking, paragliding and craft shopping.
Day 31-35 Conservation tour, Kruger National Park, South Africa
From Swaziland you’ll then venture on an exciting 5 day camping safari into the heart of the world famous Kruger Park, including 4 nights camping in the park and unlimited game drives exploring the vast wilderness with the expert guidance of one of our wildlife guides. Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most famous conservation area. Spanning nearly 20,000 km2 it covers a vast array of habitats and associated wildlife. It has an aura of ancient times and offers some of the best opportunities in the world to view Africa’s big game.
Previous groups have had great sightings of lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, wild dog and a variety of other of Kruger’s specialties. You will also have the exciting opportunity to take part in a guided bush walk as well as a night drive where you’ll go in search of nocturnal wildlife.
On Day 35 you will depart Kruger and return to the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland.
Day 36 Departure
Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the backpacker lodge in Swaziland and transfer by road to Johannesburg to catch your flight.
Airport transfer is included and provided by All Out Africa on the designated departure day, otherwise early departures are responsible for their own transportation.
