Where are you from?

Denmark

What project did you sign up for?

Brian: Building

Camilla and kids: Sports education

What do you do for a living?

Brian: Building consultant

Camilla: High school teacher (biology and sports-science)

What does volunteering mean to you?

Making a difference for people in need, and in this case, as a bonus, experiencing and learning about another country and culture.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

Inspired by the information we were given by our travel agency, Travel Alott. As a family with 2 kids, we thought it was meaningful to work with and help, other kids.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

Travelling and experiencing other countries and cultures, will almost always have long term positive impact. It is in our opinion essential, in order to learn and understand the world we live in. Through volunteering for All Out Africa, we were given the privilege of meeting many local people, hearing their story and learning about their life. Yes, we as Europeans, have many privileges, but do we live a happier life? Not necessarily!

Where are you from?

My name is Noor, I am eighteen years old and am from Haarlem, the Netherlands.

What project did you sign up for?

I signed up for the childcare/teaching program.

What do you do for a living?

After graduating last May I started travelling. Whenever I am home I work in hospitality, as a nanny and as a tutor.

What does volunteering mean to you?

Volunteering to me means making a change, however big or small, short-term or long-term. It is all about goals and expectations. Going into this with an open mind showed me how much of a difference volunteering can actually make. From a smile or laughter to breakthroughs in someone’s academic progress. Seeing how far the children that are now in high school have come, makes the small struggles with the infants at the NCP’s completely worth it.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

All Out Africa, specifically, offers volunteers the perfect combination in exploring a country (or multiple), travelling and volunteering amongst wonderful staff who offer guidance and advice. All Out Africa helps people that are most vulnerable in a way that is most effective, making it worth your while as a volunteer.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

I obviously knew getting into this I would be surrounded by people who do things differently than I am used to. Learning about this new culture and volunteering in a community with such different habits gave me a better understanding of what it means to be a volunteer and what it means to be born in the place you are. It did not only teach me how fortunate I am but also how much can be done with so little. Volunteering has a positive impact, not only for the people you work with, but also going onwards. It gives a fresh perspective.

Where are you from?

I am from The Netherlands, I live near Amsterdam

What project did you sign up for?

Kruger to coast (4 weeks)

What do you do for a living?

I am currently on a gap year and I want to study Tourism ????

What does volunteering mean to you?

That is such a tough question, in my own understanding volunteering is about giving your time and skills, for the benefit of others, the local community and very importantly yourself. It was so special to make the kids happy and do something for someone else. I learned a lot from this experience.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

It was recommended by the agency I signed in.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

I have learned so much from this experience, I am starting to see life differently and most importantly, what I took from this trip is that always appreciate what you have! There is always someone out there who wishes they had what you have. This experience has a great impact on my life. I appreciate everything so much more and my problems are not that big anymore.

Humans have done a pretty good job exploring the earth thus far, climbing mountains, crossing continents and planting flags in

Humans have done a pretty good job exploring the earth thus far, climbing mountains, crossing continents and planting flags in the name of science. One part of the world that has remained mysterious to us, though, is the very place that accounts for 99% of the Earths’ living space and 71% of its surface: the ocean.

We may have sailed across it, drilled for oil in it, fished a fair amount of its coastline and we’ve let James Cameron show us the deepest part of the ocean, 7 miles down in the Mariana Trench. Despite all our exploitations of the big blue, though, it is estimated that 95% of the ocean remains unexplored.

It is curiosity that drives our exploration and discoveries. The more we learn, the more we realize we do not know. It’s like the more light we cast, the more shadows we create. It’s the need to see what’s beyond the edge of your lights, to see the unknown for yourself, that’s the force that drives all exploration. As Jacques Cousteau said: “If we knew what was there, we wouldn’t have to go”.

Aside from visiting the moon, SCUBA diving can be one of the most surreal experiences of your life. From glowing microscopic plankton to mysterious ocean giants (even peacock mantis shrimp!), we still have so much to understand about the underwater environment.

All Out Africa endeavors to teach people the art of diving and the skill of marine science research. The volunteer and research intern courses work side-by-side with active marine researchers, learning the challenges they face and the wonder of the underwater world. Tofo, Mozambique remains to be one of the worlds few near-pristine diving hotpots, with whale sharks and manta rays and many more iconic marine creatures all year round.
