Where are you from?

Hi, there! My name is Daphne, I am 23 years old and from the Netherlands.

What project did you sign up for?

I signed up for the 6 week Kruger to Coast project and chose Childcare as my voluntary work. My role was to assist the NCP teacher, educate children between 3 to 5 years of age and concentrate on the language, motor, basic academic and social skills of a child in order to prepare them for primary school. In the afternoons, we had the Homework Clubs with older children, most of them are NCP graduates, from the ages of 12 to 17. We helped them with their homework and if they did not have any, we would played mind games.

What do you do for a living?

Actually, I obtained my Master of Science degree in Marketing Management the Friday before I started the program. At this moment, I am looking for a job.

What does volunteering mean to you?

In my opinion, volunteering means giving something back to a world where there cannot be enough help. In my case, this world was the local community of where my NCP was in. I managed to give something back to the local community in a sense that I helped the kids in writing and learning small English phrases. Afterwards, I never expected that volunteering would mean that much to me. It is impossible to describe the feeling you get when you manage to get a smile on the kids’ faces, or when they – after a couple of times of trying – write a certain word correctly.

Where are you from?

My name is Noor, I am eighteen years old and am from Haarlem, the Netherlands.

What project did you sign up for?

I signed up for the childcare/teaching program.

What do you do for a living?

After graduating last May I started travelling. Whenever I am home I work in hospitality, as a nanny and as a tutor.

What does volunteering mean to you?

Volunteering to me means making a change, however big or small, short-term or long-term. It is all about goals and expectations. Going into this with an open mind showed me how much of a difference volunteering can actually make. From a smile or laughter to breakthroughs in someone’s academic progress. Seeing how far the children that are now in high school have come, makes the small struggles with the infants at the NCP’s completely worth it.

All Out Africa, specifically, offers volunteers the perfect combination in exploring a country (or multiple), travelling and volunteering amongst wonderful staff who offer guidance and advice. All Out Africa helps people that are most vulnerable in a way that is most effective, making it worth your while as a volunteer.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

I obviously knew getting into this I would be surrounded by people who do things differently than I am used to. Learning about this new culture and volunteering in a community with such different habits gave me a better understanding of what it means to be a volunteer and what it means to be born in the place you are. It did not only teach me how fortunate I am but also how much can be done with so little. Volunteering has a positive impact, not only for the people you work with, but also going onwards. It gives a fresh perspective.

What does volunteering mean to you?

That is such a tough question, in my own understanding volunteering is about giving your time and skills, for the benefit of others, the local community and very importantly yourself. It was so special to make the kids happy and do something for someone else. I learned a lot from this experience.

It was recommended by the agency I signed in.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

I have learned so much from this experience, I am starting to see life differently and most importantly, what I took from this trip is that always appreciate what you have! There is always someone out there who wishes they had what you have. This experience has a great impact on my life. I appreciate everything so much more and my problems are not that big anymore.

Where are you from?

Hello, I’m Annabell and born and raised in Denmark.

What project did you sign up for?

I sign up for working with children and luckily, I ended up doing sport with the Swazi kids at different NCP’s.

What do you do for a living?

For a living, I’m head of the waitress at a restaurant where we have all from people coming to eat before moving to day meetings, confirmations or big parties up to 900 people. So, I have a busy everyday life with up to 16 hours shifts, but I love my work and love what I’m doing.

What does volunteering mean to you?

Actually, it did not mean anything to me before I came to Africa. But after being in Eswatini and helping all the children to have fun (more fun – because they were ALWAYS smiling) it gave me a new sign of volunteering and made me realize they are people out there that need my help, your help.

I remember visiting one of the NCPs, the kids started jumping, clapping and shouting “ALL OUT AFRICA, ALL OUT AFRICA”, my face was soaked with tears and my heart melted, I was happy to see these beautiful kids.

I booked my trip through a company called Travel Alott, so I didn’t choose All Out Africa, they choose me

But they were SO nice and sweet, and you could ask them everything and they will try to figure something out for you and help you. Great staff, actually love them and I will truly recommend book a trip with All Out Africa.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it have any positive impact in your life?

Not as a volunteer, but the whole trip to South Africa alone with people from all over the world, showed me, that I could really do it. I was so scared to go, but it was my best trip so far. It showed me that sometimes we just have to jump into it and just do something. And I will definitely go around the world (and go back to Eswatini) to help people.
