While sipping my first cup of tea this morning, my morning fix, LinkedIn notifications pop up on my phone screen.

While sipping my first cup of tea this morning, my morning fix, LinkedIn notifications pop up on my phone screen. My initial thought was that I must have received a ton of replies from a comment I made in one of my connection’s posts.

As I browse through the Linkedin app, I began reading, congratulations messages from my connections and it registered late that this month is my official 3rd anniversary working for All Out Africa. A big thanks to all of you who sent me a quick note, I appreciate all of the kind words.

I started reflecting on my experience working at All Out Africa, and I realized how my work anniversary is a bigger deal to me than I thought. I remember my first day at work as a photography intern, my heart was beating, pulse racing, nerves ticking as I entered the threshold of what would be my workplace the next three years. 2018 to be precise, I was young and full of great expectations. I worked very hard that year and to my surprise, I was promoted to be a Marketing Assistant and Team Leader. I was assigned to create content for All Out Africa and do other marketing tasks under the supervision of Ginger Green who was the Marketing Coordinator then.

Simise with volunteers planting a tree during World Environment Day

During my experience at All Out Africa, I have learned that progress does not stand still and living within your purpose is not easy but it is all worth it. I am thankful that the company provided me with opportunities for self-development. So, my everyday advice is to use every opportunity to do your work to the best of your ability and choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

Before I drop the microphone I would like to thank the All Out Africa Team, Ginger, all the international volunteers who contributed immensely to my career and lastly I will forever be grateful to Kim and Robs Roques as they have given me the head start towards my career.

I thank you.

Over 200 children have benefitted from our Homework Club. Since it was established in 2015, this study group has been an afternoon activity dedicated to our former NCP children who are in primary school. The main aim of this activity is to improve or strengthen their English, Mathematics and a bit of Science skills. With the help of volunteers and All Out Africa staff members, we are receiving positive feedback from school teachers that the children at the homework are producing outstanding results.

We have received a gratitude letter from Bongekile Matisa, a former NCP graduate, homework club member and this year she started her High school.

My name is Bongekile Matisa. I started homework club in 2016, by then I was doing my 4th grade and I have been producing outstanding results. Homework Club has helped me a lot with my studies, I am now doing my first year in high school and all thanks to homework club.

I want to thank All Out Africa for starting this afternoon activity (Homework Club) and it has been so helpful to me. I know that some of the homework club members will agree with me. Lastly I want to thank the volunteers who have been helping us with our studies and not forgetting Uncle Tjengisa. I will miss Homework Club. Thank you so much All Out Africa, love you so much and I wish you all the best.

Where are you from?

Hi, my name is Ward, I am 16 years old and I’m from the Netherlands.

What project did you sign up for?

I signed up for Kruger to Coast (4 weeks) trip. Whereas in Eswatini I signed up for the sports development program. At the beginning of the day we participated with the warm-up which most of the time ended up with people dancing. After the warm-up we (the volunteers) helped setting up small sport courses for the kids to participate in. And most of the times we participated as well. After every sports session we had plenty of free time, to just play with the kids. At around 2 a clock we went to homework club, where we helped kids around the age of 9-17 with their homework and sometimes strategic insight by playing games.

What do you do for a living?

I just finished my high school, and now I will be studying, while having a side job at a supermarket.

What does volunteering mean to you?

Volunteering to me means helping people who need help without getting payed. It’s about being there for people without asking something in return.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

I chose All Out Africa because, the trip (Kruger to Coast) had everything I wanted. They gave me the opportunity to do a safari, volunteering work and a week Mozambique. It was the best perfect trip ever and everything was well organised.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

It really had a positive impact on my life. I learned to appreciate the luxury we have in the Netherlands, but I also learned to appreciate the way of living in the Southern of Africa. It really gave me an insight of how people live in really poor countries. Overall I am really glad I chose to go on this adventure and I will certainly do it again (if I have the money for it ).

My Day at All Out Africa was arguably the most wholesome days I have had in 2019 so far. With the welcoming and warm emails of Tjengisa, I was comfortable with the hospitality that was at All Out Africa Offices. However, I was overwhelmed by the spirit of the staff at All Out they treated me as if I was a diplomat or something. I was at their offices bright and early Wednesday Morning, coming in before some of the staff. As they came in I was greeted with a smile and hug by one of the interns Penny which removed any thoughts of worry in my head about how people would react to finding a stranger sitting in the reception area.

I then further was greeted by Eunice who clearly broke down exactly what All Out Africa did and what I would be doing today, which then sub-consciously persuaded me into participating in the homework club which was one of the highlights of the day. As the day started and we went to the NCP past Elangeni, my heart was filled when picking up the children to take them to the pre-school. Each and every one of their faces lit up when they saw the All Out Africa kombi stopping to let them in. I was then re-assured that I was going to a place, I was participating in something that brought joy to other people’s lives.

Within the pre-school I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the welcoming spirit of the children and the class teacher, I even ended up reading the story of the day, which filled my heart. I was also able to find put particularly for my research about the more logistical side of this heaven-sent organisation.

I then took a quick lunch break at Gables and headed back to the offices for homework club, on the ride there I sat in the front seat and Mr Tjengisa further debriefed me on the logistics of the Homework club and how they run it, giving me a context of where we were going and what we are doing, which really helps in mentally preparing myself. At the homework club, I was lucky to be given the most outspoken fun loving child of the group, Bongekile Matisa. She was able to show me the importance of homework club and the impact it has on the people of my country.

I would like to praise the work that All Out Africa does especially in my community and the welcoming spirit which they have. The team is honestly fantastic and I was overjoyed to know that there was such great service in my country. A highlight of my 2019, I look forward to working with you, volunteering or even helping in any way I can with All Out Africa.
