Where are you from? Hi, my name is Ward, I am 16 years old and I’m from the Netherlands. What

Where are you from?

Hi, my name is Ward, I am 16 years old and I’m from the Netherlands.

What project did you sign up for?

I signed up for Kruger to Coast (4 weeks) trip. Whereas in Eswatini I signed up for the sports development program. At the beginning of the day we participated with the warm-up which most of the time ended up with people dancing. After the warm-up we (the volunteers) helped setting up small sport courses for the kids to participate in. And most of the times we participated as well. After every sports session we had plenty of free time, to just play with the kids. At around 2 a clock we went to homework club, where we helped kids around the age of 9-17 with their homework and sometimes strategic insight by playing games.

What do you do for a living?

I just finished my high school, and now I will be studying, while having a side job at a supermarket.

What does volunteering mean to you?

Volunteering to me means helping people who need help without getting payed. It’s about being there for people without asking something in return.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

I chose All Out Africa because, the trip (Kruger to Coast) had everything I wanted. They gave me the opportunity to do a safari, volunteering work and a week Mozambique. It was the best perfect trip ever and everything was well organised.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

It really had a positive impact on my life. I learned to appreciate the luxury we have in the Netherlands, but I also learned to appreciate the way of living in the Southern of Africa. It really gave me an insight of how people live in really poor countries. Overall I am really glad I chose to go on this adventure and I will certainly do it again (if I have the money for it ).

Where are you from?

Denmark

What project did you sign up for?

Brian: Building

Camilla and kids: Sports education

What do you do for a living?

Brian: Building consultant

Camilla: High school teacher (biology and sports-science)

What does volunteering mean to you?

Making a difference for people in need, and in this case, as a bonus, experiencing and learning about another country and culture.

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

Inspired by the information we were given by our travel agency, Travel Alott. As a family with 2 kids, we thought it was meaningful to work with and help, other kids.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact on your life?

Travelling and experiencing other countries and cultures, will almost always have long term positive impact. It is in our opinion essential, in order to learn and understand the world we live in. Through volunteering for All Out Africa, we were given the privilege of meeting many local people, hearing their story and learning about their life. Yes, we as Europeans, have many privileges, but do we live a happier life? Not necessarily!

Where are you from?

I am from India

What project did you sign up for?

Build a future (Eswatini)

What do you do for a living?

I just graduated high school and I’m currently on a gap year before I head to university

What does volunteering mean to you?

Volunteering to me means taking out the time to help a community that deserves support but doesn’t necessarily have access to a lot of it. Any form of help that contributes to improving people’s quality of life is always appreciated and volunteering provides an organized and thus effective way of accomplishing this. I believe it’s important to bear in mind that the impact of the help given doesn’t always have to manifest immediately, but contributing to a bigger cause by taking those small steps is what matters. Volunteering abroad also often encompasses travelling, which is an integral part of learning too – through travelling, it is possible to find out more about the community you’re volunteering in and as a result, you may find it easier to cater to the needs of the community and be a more effective volunteer.

During my time on the building project, we started to build a new Neighborhood Carepoint, a pre-school care centre, where kids learn the basics such as the English alphabet. All out Africa has seven NCPs, and the eighth one coming up would serve as an opportunity for more kids to join and spend their early years in an organized centre that aims to nurture them not only intellectually but emotionally too.

Stepping out of your comfort to volunteer abroad could be quite daunting, but once you do it, you will fall in love merely with how much you get to learn from your experiences and the people you meet, like-minded or otherwise!

Reason for choosing All Out Africa?

All out Africa seemed to have a wide range of projects in countries across southern Africa that encompassed quality travelling into your itinerary, without compromising on your time dedicated to volunteering! Volunteers are fully immersed and involved in their projects, making their efforts effective and widely appreciated by the communities that receive help.

Your experience as a volunteer, did it had any positive impact in your life?

My experience as a volunteer changed my life, my whole perspective on life and taught me so much about the world and myself! I learnt so much about Swazi culture, one I had no clue about, but is, in fact, so rich with traditions and festivities, and I met the most amazing, like-minded people that I still talk to on a regular basis! It was truly one of the best weeks of my life and I thank All Out Africa for making this experience so unique and unforgettable!

At All Out Africa, there are many things that set us apart. One of them is our fantastic team! That’s why we decided it was time to sit down with our staff and have them answer a few fun questions about why they love what they do!

Today we are interviewing Michael, our Building Project Coordinator! Michael is always full of laughs and never afraid to get his hands dirty. Here is a bit more about him…

What is your favourite thing about your job?

I love teaching the volunteers how to work like a Swazi! Its fun watching them learn our traditional building techniques, and watch a structure come up.

When was a time you thought to yourself “wow, I love what I do!”

In 2010 I said “wow” when a volunteer took interest in a special water system project I was developing. The volunteer raised a donation to complete the entire project! What a success!

Where is your favourite local hang out?

I love spending time with the volunteers at Lidwala, the lodge where the volunteers stay. It has such a relaxing vibe and is a great place to chat and learn about our different cultures ( or nap in the hammocks

When you’re not changing the world, what do you do for fun?

When I’m not out in the field building things, I love playing soccer. If i’m lucky I even get to play with a few local legends!

When you wake up in the morning what do you look forward to most?

I love working with the different volunteers. Not many people can say they have friends from all over the world!

If you had a super power what would it be?

I would be a hip-hop star. I can’t sing, so I would want to ability to rap in front of large crowds of people.

If you were a volunteer with AOA, what program or tour would you sign up for? (and why?)

Building of course! You can actually see how you are contributing to the communities for years to come!
