Hi, my name is Emilie. For the past two months, I worked with the NGO Fair and Square via All Out Africa. Fair and Square is an organisation that supports women and youth entrepreneurs in Eswatini by strengthening their skills through training, trade, and advocacy.

After almost five years working as a consultant in sustainable finance in Belgium and Germany, I decided to take a few months break to experience humanitarian work while being emerged in a new culture. I chose the project with Fair and Square because its mission resonated with me and was close to my field. I had never heard of Eswatini before, but quickly succumbed to the charm of the country and its people.

My main assignment was to support a women-owned agricultural cooperative producing sustainable agri-food products. I had the chance to meet the women behind the cooperative and to attend their Board meetings, which helped me better understand the specific challenges small farming organisations face in Eswatini – such as limited access to financing, payment delays, lack of infrastructure for distribution, and gaps in managerial skills.

In this context, I initiated the development of a risk assessment grid based on prior literature. This tool is designed to support agricultural cooperatives or smallholder farmers in the country to better capture their risk profile and to define appropriate risk management solutions tailored to their specific context. I also gathered information on the requirements for exporting food products to the European market, as the cooperative is now seeking to expand its reach beyond Eswatini.

In addition to my main assignment, I also had the opportunity to spend time to other community projects outside my field, such as homework club, small building activities, or even creating new recipes to help a local producer market her chili sauce.

The paper, published late last year in Frontiers in Marine Science, highlights the ground-breaking work being done by our Marine Research Programme in Tofo Beach.

So what’s the research all about?

Over a period of three years, Jule and the team used long-life remote underwater video cameras (LL-RUVs) to observe visitors to the reef - without any disturbance by divers. These cameras were placed at reef “cleaning stations,” where species like manta rays gather to get spruced up by small fish. The result? Over 500 hours of footage revealing 14 different shark and ray species, including reef mantas, oceanic mantas, and even the elusive smalleye stingray.

The footage captured not only who’s visiting these reef spas, but also some interesting and rarely witnessed behaviours and interactions between species. It’s all part of a bigger picture that helps scientists better understand how to protect these incredible (and often endangered) creatures.

Hi, my name is Loes van Hest. I completed a 10-week internship in the field of health and nutrition. I went to Eswatini to learn more about the culture and way of life here. I wanted to understand the conditions better and hoped I could assist All Out Africa by offering advice where needed.

I began by measuring BMIs at the NCPs in Ekuzukekeni and Ezulwini, where I discovered a significant difference between the two. After measuring the BMIs, I also focused on a school in a rural area, Lamgambhi. Despite their different environments, Ezulwini and Lamgambhi had one thing in common: around 40% of the children in both schools were underweight. I wanted to find out why, as the conditions at these two NCPs are very different.

I gathered information from teachers, staff, and other people I met during my internship in the neighbourhood. After identifying the reasons for the underweight issues, I created a suggestion report. In this report, I provided advice and suggestions that All Out Africa can implement in the future.

I learned a lot from my internship. I developed skills in creating effective schedules, setting priorities, and establishing boundaries. I was given the freedom to determine what I needed to achieve my goals while receiving the necessary guidance and support.

I experienced the culture in various ways, observing the differences between city life, peri-urban areas, and rural areas, and how these environments affect the residents. I learned that each environment has unique challenges, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. However, one thing remains important across all areas: raising awareness about issues like healthy living, especially understanding what is and isn’t healthy and the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle. There’s no better place to start than at an early age, at the NCP.

Hi there! My name is Clare Gill, over the course of October, I have been working in partnership with Likusasa

Hi there! My name is Clare Gill, over the course of October, I have been working in partnership with Likusasa Letfu via All Out Africa to help empowering youth and support the young producers of Eswatini so that they can develop sustainable businesses of their own.

A bit about me:

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Marketing Management from the University of Gloucestershire (UK), I have spent the last decade working in advertising agencies across the UK and Australia. I am accomplished and have certificates in product management and advanced strategy. My speciality is understanding the psychology behind purchase journeys, from people discovering your product to what would progress them to make a sale.

Inspired by the Youth Entrepreneurship of Eswatini

The entrepreneurial spirit of Eswatini has been truly inspiring. During my time here, I have had one-on-one coaching sessions with youth producers, met with young mothers from the LaMgabhi community who have been building businesses to support their new families and have given a product management lecture at the Institute of Development Management for Junior Achievement Eswatini and UNFPA.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-12366" class="wp-image-12366 size-full" src="https://alloutafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-19-at-18.19.11_025057e6.jpg" alt="Clare meeting with young mothers from LaMgabhi who have been building businesses to support their families.
Building businesses takes hard work, dedication, and resilience, and in my short time here, it has been incredible to see the progress that the young entrepreneurs have been making. They are the future of Eswatini.

Clare Delivering a Lecture on Product Management.

Khangisa Shop and Market

At the front of Likusasa Letfu, we have an outlet selling handmade, homemade, and home-grown youth produce. Our items range from jams to biltong, cushions and homeware, art, jewelry, and cleaning products. Each item represents the creativity and potential of our youth and serves as a seed for creating more sustainable futures.

Khangisa Shop: A Display Space for Local Producers’ Products

On the last Saturday of each month, we host a market at Mahhala for youth producers to showcase their wares free of charge. Participants are responsible for bringing their own tables and display materials.
