PROJECT OVERVIEW

As an intern, you will experience hands-on field research relevant to the Conservation of savannah ecosystems in Africa.

Join us and study birds, reptiles, ungulates, rodents, small predators, bats, vegetation and a variety of other plants and animal life in one of southern Africa’s most unique Conservation areas within a global biodiversity hotspot.

Investigate the interface among protected areas, rural communities and commercial agriculture in Eswatini’s Lubombo Conservancy while based in the private Mbuluzi Game Reserve and also working in neighboring Hlane Royal National Park and Mlawula Nature Reserve.

Although savannahs are well represented in African Conservation areas, they are subjected to increasing degradation as a result of human influences through land use and climate change. Though well known for large charismatic game such as elephants, rhinos and lions, there are a variety of smaller species that are threatened and are arguably more important to the functioning of savannahs.

Although this project is based in areas containing big game, our research activities are focused on a large variety of fauna and flora including birds, ungulates, small predators, rodents, reptiles, bats and vegetation. You can be involved in biodiversity monitoring, radio telemetry movement studies, small mammal trapping, mist netting to gain valuable field experience.

YOUR ROLE

An intern, although unpaid, is different from a volunteer in that they are expected to bring some knowledge and/or experience in the area they are working in. There are fewer internship posts available so competition for these is higher. Interns will be working at a more career focused strategic level and developing local capacity to work effectively and with meaning, as well as gaining valuable hands-on practical experience during their placement. Interns are also expected to take on more responsibility and to create their own goals and seek activities to be involved in or lead. They will have a mentor assigned to them to guide them during the internship.

The research may involve weighing, measuring, tagging and banding young birds (especially raptors), bats and reptiles and rodents to monitor their condition and enable the study of their population dynamics and dispersal. It also may involve fitting radio-transmitters to track the animals to determine their home range, distribution and movements.

Some of the activities you will get involved in may include:

Biodiversity Monitoring

Seasonal Savannah systems are under constant threat from human activities resulting in biodiversity losses, shrub encroachment and pollution. Understanding and monitoring trends in plant and animal habitat use and population dynamics are critical in combating savannah loss and degradation.

Monitoring of large mammals

We contribute to citizen science projects monitoring populations of certain animals such as giraffe, hyena, genet and zebra by photographing animals when sighted so that unique markings can be used to ID individual animals. Sightings are uploaded onto databases used to monitor worldwide populations. These are long term ongoing projects

Control of invasive species

Within the parks, certain invasive species of flora are monitored need to be periodically removed. You will learn about how invasive species are monitored and controlled and are likely to assist with this work of digging up and removing species deemed when it is deemed necessary.

Itinerary for your experience

Day 1

Fly into OR Tambo Airport, Johannesburg where you will be met by All Out Africa staff members who will transfer you by road from Johannesburg to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Day 2

The second day begins with an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about the culture and country, how to effectively contribute during your volunteer experience.

Day 3

The third day begins with an early start as you are transferred to our Savannah Research Centre in the east of Eswatini in Mbuluzi Game Reserve. Here you will meet your knowledgeable research coordinators and will receive a thorough orientation to life at the camp and the research activities.

Day 4-5

and other weekdays for the duration of your stay. You will spend these days assisting with research and Conservation activities. camp and the research activities.

Day 6 - 7

Weekends are free at the SRC, but please appreciate you are in a rural environment far from city infrastructure! Bring a book, writing pad, go for a run/walk, or enjoy other passions of yours as you enjoy the beautiful savannah reserve.

For 4 Week Option, weeks 2-4 continue in a similar fashion.

Day 29

Return Home. Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will transfer by road to Johannesburg.

Airport transfer is included and facilitated by All Out Africa if on the designated departure day.

Day 29 Onward

Onwards Continue with your volunteer project as described on days 4-5, giving you more time to contribute to your project. Departure by road transfer to Johannesburg on your final day.

OVERVIEW

The Marine Research Centre (MRC) is located in Tofo, Mozambique which has stunning megafauna and microfauna including whale sharks, humpback whales, manta rays, dolphins, turtles and sea horses, making it an exciting place to conduct research. The MRC is located overlooking the beach and next door is our accommodation and dive centre.

At our long-term research station in Mozambique, we offer field courses in marine ecology and data collection techniques. We have been working in Mozambique for over 8 years and have developed a strong program and a stable working environment with good in-country support. Field Methods in Marine Ecology

At our long-term research station in Mozambique, we offer field courses in marine ecology and data collection techniques. We have been working in Mozambique for over 8 years and have developed a strong program and a stable working environment with good in-country support. We regularly encounter a wide range of animals and have global network of scientific collaborators to which our on-going data sets are provided, alongside the free availability to Mozambican students and for use in government management plans.

Techniques include:

Reef health surveys – indicator species, coral cover, urchin density, abundance counts, biomass estimation
Large animal monitoring – photo identification, population estimates, residency/transience, migratory trends, injury recovery
Anthropogenic impact assessment – area usage mapping, monitoring of unsustainable catch, sustainable tourism, Code of Conduct development

Genetic studies – whale shark sampling, humpback whale sampling, khuls ray sampling, coral sampling, frogfish sampling
Biodiversity assessment – estuary monitoring, sea horse identification and density, usage of the inter-tidal zone
Behavioral studies – wildlife behavioral reactions to human interactions, humpback whale area usage during migration

Learning objectives:

Describe the diversity and physical processes that characterize the Southern African marine environment. Understand the challenges and importance of working in developing countries.
Discuss the biodiversity and key ecological processes occurring in specifically southern Mozambique, and in the sub-tropics generally.
Outline the ecological roles of key groups of organisms in the marine environment.

Consideration of the social issues of wildlife/coastal/marine ecosystem conservation and management. Be able to discuss the impacts, benefits and risks of the local peoples’ approaches to the environment, sustainable development and responsible tourism.
Develop critical-thinking regarding research project design, and understanding of a range of techniques.

Each month there are 20 days of on-water activities, lectures, tutorials and field techniques. Stay on site at our well equipped Savannah Research Centres being supported by our experienced scientists. Volunteers, Interns, Researchers, School and University groups all welcome.

At our long-term research station in Eswatini, we offer field courses in ecology and data collection techniques. We have been working in Eswatini for over 12 years and have developed a strong program and a stable working environment with good in-country support. We regularly encounter a wide range of animals and have global network of scientific collaborators to which our on-going data sets are provided, and we work in partnership with both University of Eswatini and University of Florida.

We welcome school, university or special interest groups to the Savannah Research Centre for short term study visits. We can show you are work and involve you in our conservation efforts. Researchers can come to set up their own studies and our staff can offer expert assistance. volunteers and interns can spend time assisting our staff at the centre from 2 to 12 weeks. ACCOMMODATION

During your stay you will be accommodate at the Savannah Research Centre located in the Mbuluzi Game Reserve, living in a private camp in the reserve. You will have a furnished tent with solar light. The camp is supplied with running water, communal showers and toilets and central kitchen, dining and socialising unit. Bedding is provided and laundry facilities are available.

The Savannah Research Centre is set on the banks of the Mbuluzi River in Mbuluzi Game Reserve. It is a field research facility catering for researchers and students who seek to conduct ecological and other field research in the Lubombo Conservancy of NE Eswatini. The facility caters for up to 30 people and includes a field laboratory, computer laboratory, tented accommodation, a kitchen, dining facility, ablution facilities with flush toilets and hot showers and wash basins, outdoor bonfire and a viewing and discussion deck. Mbuluzi Game Reserve is home to plentiful wildlife in Eswatini. Game-viewing roads, hiking trails and a mountain-bike route wind around the reserve, criss-crossing the Mlawula River and offering impressive views. The terrain undulates between the deep Mbuluzi gorge and steep Lubombo escarpment, with dense riverine forests, rocky cliffs and open savannah. It supports a good population of giraffe, plus kudu, blue wildebeest, zebra, impala and other herbivores. Hippos move in and out of the reserve, while spotted hyenas and leopards are occasionally seen. Over 300 bird species have been recorded, including rarities such as African finfoot, and the rivers hold numerous crocodiles.

MEALS

Volunteers, interns and students receive 3 meals a day when joining an All Out Africa experience. These meals are provided and are eaten together on the communal decking area in the summer or in the dining room during winter. Breakfast is self-service from a selection of items including cereals, bread, fruit, yogurt, eggs and spreads. Lunch too is self-service from items such as bread, ham, cheese, salad and fruits. Dinner is a cooked meal which you will assist with cooking on a rotational basis. Types of dishes served include pasta, stir-fry, curry and stew.

Vegetarians and most food allergies can be catered for.In order to fully support you during your experience, please advise us at time of booking if you have any food allergies or preferences, so we can cater for these in our meal plans. We will do our best but be prepared your food selection may not be as varied as other participants. If your food allergies/preference are quite restrictive, we may require you to pay an additional fee to allow us to cater for you.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Kruger Safari and Volunteering Adventure Tour will take you through some of the best that southern Africa has to offer in terms of wildlife and culture.

Begin in Eswatini where you will get involved in grassroots community projects and make an active contribution to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children.

Embark on a 5-day camping safari through the world-famous Kruger National Park to spot big game. Not only will you have the amazing opportunity to see some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife but you will also have the opportunity to participate in an important community development projects.

YOUR ROLE

There are 2 distinct parts to this travel experience each with its own interesting flavor. In Kruger, you will be joining a camping safari holiday. Here your days will be spent on game drives searching for the incredibly diverse wildlife that this world-renowned national park has to offer, while at night you will be camped out under the African stars, sitting around a crackling campfire listening to tales of the African bush. While In Kruger, your guide will teach you about the animals and plants of the African Savannah and how important it is to protect this beautiful but fragile Eco-system. When you arrive in the beautiful mountainous Kingdom of Eswatini your role will switch to volunteer as you get involved in projects that aim to uplift the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. Volunteers have the option of choosing one of the following projects:

Child Care

This involves assisting the teachers at our Neighbourhood Care Points (NCP’s), which act as pre-schools for orphaned and vulnerable children

Building

This involves projects such as laying bricks for new classrooms or maintaining the gardens at our NCP’s

Sports

This includes assisting with running sporting activities with our NCP children including swimming lessons (depending on the season).

Day 1

Day 3 - 6

Conservation tour, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Kruger National Park is probably Africa’s most famous Conservation area. Spanning nearly 20,000 KM2 it covers a vast array of habitats and associated wildlife. We venture on a 5-day tour into the heart of Kruger Park including four nights camping in the park and plenty of game drives exploring the vast wilderness with our wildlife guides.

Day 7

You will depart Kruger for the beautiful Kingdom of Eswatini.

Day 8 - 14

Volunteer Projects, Eswatini You will spend the next few days volunteering on your selected project.

2 WEEK OPTION

Day 14

Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the backpacker lodge in Eswatini and transfer by road to Johannesburg.

Airport transfer is included and facilitated by All Out Africa if on the designated departure day.

3 WEEK+ OPTION

Day 15 Onwards

Continue with your volunteer project as described on days 8-14 giving you more time to contribute to your project.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The focus of the Sports Development Project in Eswatini is to improve the well-being of disadvantaged children and youth within semi-rural Swazi communities, through sport and play.

The aim is to develop these kids by making them stimulated, focused, fit and healthy, while at the same time as building their confidence through physical activity.

The Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly known as Eswatini) has the world’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, with approximately 31% of the population being infected.

In 2010 it was estimated that there were close to 200,000 orphaned children in the Kingdom due to HIV/AIDS. Many more children are now without a parent and live with an extended family that already has stretched resources.

Unemployment is high, approximately 39% of Swazi’s are without a job, which rises considerably to 53% among youth. About 66% of the population is unable to meet basic food needs, while 43% live in chronic poverty.

Children are particularly vulnerable and often are in desperate need of help and support.

YOUR ROLE

You will be supporting our Sports Coordinator to lead a programme across all of the NCPs (Neighbourhood Care Points) we support to provide a programme of physical education. NCPs are community centres providing basic pre-school education to children whose families could not otherwise afford it). The role involves visiting each of the NCPs in rotation in the morning to have the children participate in a variety of play activities – including song and dance, ball games, obstacle courses, tricycle riding and swimming lessons.

You are encouraged to get as involved as possible in organizing these fun-filled events that bring so much joy to the children.

Please note: The activities listed above are based on availability and may vary by season. These are samples of activities that are volunteers are likely to participate in.

In the afternoon you will attend homework club for primary school aged children most days, some days there may be an alternative activity in the afternoon, such as a lesson in the local language (Siswati). Friday afternoons are free, after a weekly meeting with the Programme Manager.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you work with children, you will be in the rural areas where modesty will be an important factor. Please make sure you dress appropriately- failure to do so may result in you missing a day of volunteering. More information about the dress code will follow in the pre-flight guide.

DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VOLUNTEER

Wake up to see the sunshine, jump in a hot shower and get yourself started for the day with breakfast!

08:30

Travel to your placement and get ready to begin your day

09:00

Participate in your chosen project assisting with organizing sports activities such as obstacle courses, running, group and educational games at the NCP’s

12:00

Time to either return to your accommodation for lunch, or eat the packed lunch you made that morning!

14:00

Begin your afternoon’s work with a full stomach and enthusiasm

16:00

Return back to your accommodation and share your day’s adventures with other volunteers, maybe even a quick swim in the pool!

18:00

Enjoy a delicious evening meal and relax!

Itinerary for your experience

Day 1

Fly into OR Tambo Airport, Johannesburg where you will be met by All Out Africa staff members who will transfer you by road from Johannesburg to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Day 2

The second day begins with an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about the culture and country, how to effectively contribute during your volunteer experience.

Day 3 - 5

Day 3-5 and other weekdays for the duration of your stay. You will spend these days volunteering on your project.

4 WEEK OPTION

Day 29

Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the backpacker lodge in Eswatini and transfer by road to Johannesburg to catch your flight.

4 WEEK+ OPTION

Day 29 Onwards

Continue with your volunteer project as described on days 3-5, giving you more time to contribute to your project and experience beautiful Eswatini. Sadly all great adventures must come to an end and on your final day you will leave the backpacker lodge in Eswatini and transfer by road to Johannesburg to catch your flight.

Airport transfer is included and facilitated by All Out Africa if on the designated departure day.
