OVERVIEW

Experience the incredibly diverse and renowned marine and savanna wildlife of southern Africa while assisting to monitor threatened species and conserve their beautiful but fragile environments.

This expedition begins with 4 weeks in stunning Tofo, volunteering with hands-on whale shark research, coral reef monitoring, whale monitoring, and manta ray and turtle identification, in one of Africa’s best scuba diving and beach destinations.   You will then travel to the beautiful Kingdom of Swaziland, with a few days to explore before departing on a 5 day tour of the world famous Kruger National Park, in search of the “big 5”.  Following your safari, you will return to Swaziland for 3 weeks of volunteering on our Savanna conservation project in the country’s north east.  Here you will help to conduct ecological research relevant to savanna ecosystems throughout southern Africa, including monitoring bats, birds, reptiles, ungulates, rodents, small predators and vegetation.

HIGHLIGHTS

The highlights of this of the diverse and rewarding expedition are:

  • Conducting hands on research and monitoring activities with some of Africa’s most special and unique animals
  • Spending time in Mozambique’s beautiful coastal village of Tofo
  • Safari in Kruger National Park in search of Africa’s famous Big 5
  • Sunset/night drive in Kruger
  • Bush walk in Kruger (optional extra to be booked once in Kruger)
  • Exploring the culture and beauty of Swaziland and experiencing life as a researcher at our Savanna Research camp

ACCOMMODATION

You will be staying at Albatroz Lodge for the duration of your experience, which is situated next to the office and dive centre, and a few steps up from stunning Tofo Beach! Here you will also receive 3 meals a day. For more information about the lodge and meals please see the Albatroz Lodge Accommodation brief.

YOUR ROLE

There are 3 distinct parts to this travel experience each with its own interesting flavour.

In Mozambique, your role will be to collect important data and conduct activities to support research and conservation efforts of the marine life in the area.

You will join other volunteers on the project to collect the data via beach walks, boat surveys, snorking and scuba dives off the coastline of Tofo in Mozambique. Volunteers are needed not only to carry out the field activities and contribute to worldwide research projects . You can expect an excellent diving, snorkelling and beach experience whilst gaining first hand marine research skills and contributing to a worthwhile project.

In Kruger you will be joining a camping safari holiday. Here your days will be spent on game drives searching for the incredibly diverse wild life that this world renowned national park has to offer while at night you will be camped out under the African stars, sitting around a crackling campfire listening to tales of the African bush. While in Kruger your guide will teach you about the animals and plants of the African savanna and how important it is to protect this beautiful but fragile eco-system.

Once in Swaziland for the last part of your program, you will engage in walking and driving through game reserves conducting research activities that locate and monitor various species of wildlife, while recording habitat and environmental variables associated with the collection of such information.

This project aims to identify which species can be used as ecological indicator of the health of the savanna ecosystem. Threatened birds and bats are also a focus of this project due to their reproduction and movement. Tortoise movements and activity are monitored while threatened and endemic plants (some found nowhere else in the world) may also be surveyed to monitor reproductive success and survival.

Day 1-2 Arrival and Orientation

Fly into Inhambane, Mozambique via Johannesburg (more details in “Getting there” section in the Destination – Mozambique file).  At the airport upon arrival in Inhambane you will be welcomed by an All Out Africa staff member who will accompany you to your accommodation in the beach village of Tofo.  The second day begins with an informative presentation that will brief you on all you need to know about your volunteer experience in Mozambique.  You will also take part in an orientation in which you will learn about the area and how to get around using public transport.
